Tips for an effective facial skin care routine

Tips for an effective facial skin care routine

As we grow older our skin shows the most visible sign of ageing. Small lines appear and wrinkles appear in areas where the skin has lost some of its youthful elasticity. Maintaining a good facial skin care routine can help your skin achieve a more youthful appearance but there are also many products and treatments on the market that can enhance this result.

In this article we will look at some of the more popular products and routines for facial skin care in more detail.

The most common routine for facial skin care is;

  • Cleansing
  • Toning
  • Exfoliating
  • Moisturising

Many products for the above steps are available over the counter in most department stores, Chemists and other retail outlets. They differ greatly in price and quite often it is a simple case of finding a range that suits both your needs and your skin type. If you go to a Beauty Salon you will notice they hold a certain brand of products, which will probably be used while carrying out facials and other treatments. These products are also available to purchase, so if you are happy with what your beauty therapist recommends then you should stick with that. If not it may be worth talking to an expert in a departments store but you have to remember they will want to sell you a certain brand as that is what they will earn commission on.

Cleansing your skin can help with removing dust, dirt and other pollutants that are in the air. You should just dab your face and neck with a suitable cleansing lotion or cream and use the tips of your fingers to gently massage it in to your skin. This should be done in an upward motion and should then be removed by using a cotton pad or some soft tissue.

Toning the skin follows the cleansing process and is an optional stage. If you cleanse properly you can avoid this step.

Exfoliation doesn’t have to be done daily as part of your facial routine, but should be done about once per week. Exfoliating the skin helps and encourages the production of new skin cells by removing the dead cells. It is often dead skin cells that block the pores so getting rid of them is a great way to improve your skin tone.

Moisturising your skin replaces some of the moisture that is lost on a day to day basis. Not all moiturisers are suitable for all skin types so make sure you choose one that is right for your skin. By moisturising your skin, you are preventing the skin for getting dry, as it can cause the top layer of the skin to break up leaving it looking flaky. While you are moisturising your skin, use a gentle upward movement on warm, damp skin for the best effects.

Some cleansers and toners may actually block the pores in your skin, if this happens then you should consider a more simple facial routine by simply using a suitable moisturiser.

As well as getting in to the habit of a facial skin care routine the following tips are also helpful in maintaining smoother more vibrant looking skin;

  • Don’t go to bed with your make-up on, use a proper make-up remover before you go through your nightly facial skin care routine.
  • Don’t use skin care products just because your friend does, find one that it suitable to your skin tone and skin type. Seek advice from a professional on this if you are unsure. If you are thinking of trying a new brand from a department store, ask for a sample first so you can check for yourself the suitability of your skin.
  • Don’t rub your skin with too much force, be gentle when applying products to it.
  • Always use sun screen and block when you are exposed to the sun.
